Topic 16 Flashcards
Urinary System
What are the functions of the urinary system
Excretion of metabolic wastes
Maintenance of water-salt balance
Maintenance of acid-base balance
Secretion of hormones
Reabsorb filtered nutrients
What is secretion
Secretion is the removal of metabolic waste from the body
What are the organs of the urinary system
Urethra
Bladder
Ureters
Kidney
What is the urethra
The urethra is the small tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body for disposal
What is the function of the bladder
Store urine until it is expelled from the body
How is the kidney connected to the bladder
1 ureter from each kidney goes into the bladder
What are ureters
Small, muscular tubes that conduct urine from kidneys to the bladder
What are kidneys
Kidneys are paired organs that are bean-shaped and reddish-brown in colour that are covered by a capsule of fibrous connective tissue and masses of adipose tissue and the concave side of the kidney has a depression where a renal artery enters and a renal vein and ureter exit the kidney
What are the 3 regions of the kidney
Renal cortex
Renal medulla
Renal pelvis
What is the renal cortex
The renal cortex is the outer granulated layer
What is the renal medulla
The renal medulla consists of cone-shaped tissue masses called renal pyramids
What is the renal pelvis
The central space that is continuous with the ureter
What is the kidney composed of
The kidney is composed of over 1 million nephrons
What do the nephrons do
The nephrons filter blood and produce urine
What is the anatomy of a nephron
Each nephron has its own blood supply with 2 capillary regions
