Tonnage requirements for a ≥24m commercial vessel Flashcards
Knowledge of the Tonnage Rule and its objective.
- Maritime rule part 48.
- Gross tonnage is calculated based on “the moulded volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship” and is used to determine things such as a ship’s manning regulations, safety rules, registration fees, and port dues.
Knowledge of which ships are required to have a tonnage certificate.
Ships of 24m or more in length
Understanding of the term ‘length’ and ‘register length’ in the tonnage rule.
Length:
-96% of the total length on a waterline at 85 percent of the least moulded depth measured from the top of the keel,
or
the length from the fore side of the stem to the axis of the rudder stock on that waterline, if that be greater
Register Length:
-Means the length of the ship measured from the
foreside of the head of the stem to the aft side of the head of the stern post
or
in the case of ship not having a stern post, to the foreside of the rudder stock
Understanding of the term ‘tonnage convention’
The Convention governs the measurement of ship, size in accordance with enclosed cubic capacity.
The size of a ship is then quoted as a gross tonnage.
The net tonnage is a measurement applicable to the ship freight capacity.
