Load Line requirements for a >24m commercial vessel Flashcards
Knowledge of the load line rule and its objective.
Maritime rule part 47 Load Lines, This is to ensure that the vessel is loaded in such a way that it maintains sufficient freeboard and reserve buoyancy.
Knowledge of which ships are required to have a Load Line certificate.
- Vessels of 24m or more in length
- Barges of 24m or more in length operating in restricted or coastal limits
- Vessels less then 24m carrying cargo
Owners and Masters obligations under the Load Line Rule.
Owner:
- The owner is to ensure the vessel is measured correctly, and survey is maintained based on these measurements.
- Provide the director or assigning authority with plans, drawings, specification and other related documents.
Master:
- The Master must ensure that the vessel complies with Part 47
- Maintains requirements for survey.
- Ensure the vessel is loaded in accordance with these survey requirements to ensure that the Load Lines on the side of the ship are not submerged at anytime when on voyage
Understanding of the term ‘Load Line convention’.
The Load Line convention was to determine a limit in which a ship can be safely loaded too, ensure that there is sufficient freeboard and reserve buoyancy for the area you are located in.
Understanding of the term ‘load line length’.
length means 96 percent of the total length on a waterline at 85 percent of the least moulded depth. measured from the top of the keel.
or
The length from the fore side of the stem to the axis of the rudder stock. if that be greater.
Understanding of potential to compromise watertight integrity and weather-tight integrity through failure to comply with load line requirements.
- Incorrect loading of the vessel can result in a loss in freeboard and reserve buoyancuy leading to potential downfloading and loss of stability in rougher weather
- A failed door seal, hatch or latch or failer to close door preperly can lead the ingress of water
Understanding of potential risk to crew safety through failure to comply with load line requirements.
-Incorrect loading of the vessel can result in a loss in freeboard and reserve buoyancuy leading to potential downfloading and loss of stability in rougher weather which could result ina capsize
