Tongue and Floor of the Mouth Flashcards
what is the roof of the oral cavity?
hard & soft palate
what is the floor of the oral cavity?
mainly soft tissues including TONGUE
what are the lateral walls of the oral cavity?
cheeks
what do the dental arches separate?
They separate the oral cavity into:
- oral vestibule
- oral cavity proper
what is the oral vestibule?
the slit like space between the teeth/gingivae and the lips/cheeks
what is the oral cavity proper?
space between the upper & lower dental arches
what is the philtrum?
the depression in the midline above the upper lip
what is the main muscular component of the lips?
the orbicularis oris
what anastomoses in the lips?
the superior & inferior labial arteries to form an arterial ring
what supplies blood to the cheeks?
buccal branches of the maxillary artery
what is the main muscular component of the cheeks?
buccinator muscle
what is the name of the mucosal fold that connects the gingivae to the lips?
labial frenulum
what muscle makes up the floor of the mouth?
mylohyoid muscle
what are the attachments of the mylohyoid muscle?
mylohyoid line of the mandible to the hyoid bone
what is the midline between the two mylohyoid muscles known as?
mylohyoid raphe
what are the attachments of the geniohyoid?
- mental spine of mandible
- body of hyoid
what divides the anterior & posterior parts of the tongue?
terminal sulcus
what are the different types of papilla to cover the tongue surface?
- fungiform
- foliate
- circumvallate
- filiforme
where does the submandibular gland open into the oral cavity?
Sublingual papillae (caruncles)
- on the floor of the mouth at either side of the frenulum of tongue
what are the intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
- superior longitudinal
- inferior longitudinal
- vertical
- transverse
what are the intrinsic muscles responsible for?
changing the size & shape of the tongue
what are the extrinsic tongue muscles responsible for?
- protruding
- retracting
- elevating
- depressing
what are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
- palatoglossus
- genioglossus
- hypoglosses
- styloglossus
what tongue muscle protrudes the tongue?
genioglossus
what is the function of the hyoglossus?
depressing sides of the tongue
what nerves enter the tongue on the external surface of the hyoglossus?
- lingual nerve
- hypoglossal nerve
what is the function of the styloglossus?
elevating and retracting the tongue
where does the palatoglossus muscle originate from?
palatine aponeurosis (fibrous tissue on posterior border of hard palate)
what is the function of the palatoglossus muscle?
depresses soft palate towards the tongue & lifts posterior tongue
what are the muscles of the tongue innervated by? what is the exception?
All innervated by HYPOGLOSSAL NERVE
APART FROM the palatoglossus
- vagus nerve
what supplies general sensation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
lingual nerve (from CNV3)
what supplies general sensation to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
Glossopharyngeal nerve
what supplies taste to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
facial nerve via chorda tympani
what supplies taste to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
glossopharyngeal nerve
what is the major arterial supply to the tongue?
lingual artery
what veins drain the tongue? where do they drain to?
Deep lingual and dorsal lingual veins
- drain into the IJV
