Tongue Flashcards
What receptors perceive sensations?
Mechanoreceptors- pressure/touch. Thermal receptors-temperature. Nociceptors- pain.
What nerve carries sensory perception to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
Cranial nerve five
What nerve carries sensory perception information to the posterior one thirds of the tongue?
Cranial nerve nine
What do chemo receptors perceive?
Taste
What nerve perceives taste in anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
Cranial nerve seven
What nerve provides taste sensation in posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
Cranial nerve nine
What nerve provides general sensory information to the oral structures and mucosa
Cranial nerve five
Does the soft palate have general sensory perception?
Yes, cranial nerve nine
How does oral sensation influence swallowing movements?
Mansson & sandburg 1975, reduced all sensory input by either administering anesthesia to the oral cavity or having the participants swallow saliva multiple times lead to absent, late or reduced swallow responses.
In reverse, increased sensory input in the form of a large bolus lead to early, more robust swallowing responses.
Why are airway protection movements modified when boluses size varies?
Oral sensory information helps to plan swallowing movements Molfenter, 2012
What happens when you bypass the oral cavity?
when the bolus is directly deposited into the pharynx one would assume that isolated for swallows would have different swallowing kinematics than oral swallows given the role of oral processing on swallowing kinematics— no, but adjustments to compensate for larger boluses was not activated.
What do you oral movements do?
Break food down for safe swallowing
What does oral sensation do?
Allows planning for swallowing kinematics that best accommodates the approaching Bolus
