Q

How does oral sensation influence swallowing movements?

A

Mansson & sandburg 1975, reduced all sensory input by either administering anesthesia to the oral cavity or having the participants swallow saliva multiple times lead to absent, late or reduced swallow responses.

In reverse, increased sensory input in the form of a large bolus lead to early, more robust swallowing responses.

Q

Why are airway protection movements modified when boluses size varies?

A

Oral sensory information helps to plan swallowing movements Molfenter, 2012

Q

What happens when you bypass the oral cavity?

A

when the bolus is directly deposited into the pharynx one would assume that isolated for swallows would have different swallowing kinematics than oral swallows given the role of oral processing on swallowing kinematics— no, but adjustments to compensate for larger boluses was not activated.

Q

What does oral sensation do?

A
