Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Flashcards
What does the RLN provide?
It provides sensory and motor innervation to the intrinsic muscles of the larynx except to the cricothyroid
Which One left or right RLN has a greater chance of injury?
The incidence of left side injury has a higher rate than that of the right side
What are the major causes of our RLN injury?
Idiopathic surgical injury and invasion of malignant tumor of the thyroid larynx esophageal or an aortic aneurysm tracheal intubation upper airway infection trauma and systemic neuromuscular disease
What are possible causes of problems with RLN regeneration?
Loss of motor neurons in nucleus ambiguous, nerve degeneration, misdirected innervation, atrophy of laryngeal muscle, loss of motor and plate
True or false bilateral RL an injury often needs a trach?
True
Does RLN innervate both adductor abductor muscles?
Yes
What supplies sensation above glottis? What about below
Above? Internal sensory nerve. Below? RLN
