Swallow Physiology Flashcards
What brainstem regions are responsible for sensory to trigger a swallow?
Nucleus tractus solitarius (nst) trigeminal nucleus
How is delay to swallow on set measured?
It is measured between two time points question. Time one is when the Bolus reaches the ramus of the mandible, time 2 is at hyoid burst.
What is considered a normal range for triggering a swallow?
Molfenter, -.22 to .54 sec
Can you comment on timing with laryngeal palpation
No, because you do not know how long the bolus has been at the base of the mandible without seeing it
What contributes to laryngeal vestibule closure?
Bio mechanical operation
What contributes to epiglottic inversion?
Epiglottis include the bolus, posterior lingual pressure & pharyngeal wall constriction.
What muscle contributes to laryngeal vestibule closure?
Contraction of the Aryepiglottic muscle
How is laryngeal vestibule closure measured?
Molfenter 2012 uses two time points: time one when it first closes and time to when it reopens. Time: .31-1.07 sec in healthy adults.
How is UES function measured?
It is measured by extent and duration. Duration of UES opening .21-.67 sec
What is the normal range of hyoid anterior movement?
7.6mm-18mm
What is the normal range for superior movement of the hyoid bone?
5.8mm-25mm
What is the superior movement of the larynx normal range?
21 mm - 34 mm
