TOB L1 Flashcards
Describe tissue
Cells + ECM
(extra-cellular matrix)
Cells + ECM work together to perform specialised function
Intestinal epithelium (histology)
Recognise intestinal epithelium
- Brush border (microvilli)
Describe the limit of resolution
Smallest distance at which two objects can be distinguised as two seperate entities
- UNRESOLVED
- RESOLVED
State the general function of membranes
Allow formation of compartments in eukaryoytes
Eukaryotic cells are compartmentalised by internal membranes
General structure of eukaryotic cells
- Endosome
- Peroxisome
- Free polyribosome
- Nucleus
- Cytosol
- Lysosome
- Golgi apparatus
- Mitochondrion
- Endoplasmic reticulum with membrane bound polyribiosomes
- Plasma membrane
THE MAJOROTY OF CELLULAR MEMBRANES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE RER
Why are phospholipids described as amphiphatic ?
They have both:
- Hydrophobic
- Hydrophillic regions
(refer to diagram, know difference between phospholipid bilayer and phospholipid monolayer)
Describe the structure of a phospholipid molecule
Phosphate head: Polar (hydrophillic) head group:
-Choline, phosphate, glycerol
Tail: Non-polar hydrophobic tails: Fatty acid
NOTE: Kink in FA tail
(Refer to diagram)
