Causes of the Civil War
Union (North) states fought the Confederate (South) States
The South disliked the industry and the cities of the North
By 1850 the North had increased their population and therefor had more political power
1850 Missouri Compromise meant free states had to return slaves
Kansas-Nebrask Act meant that states could decide if they were free or slave states
In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected mainly by the Northern voters
South Carolina seceded followed by 6 other states
15th April 1861 Abraham Lincoln declared war
When was the US Civil War
1861-1865
Black Americans in the Civil War
They could get jobs in the North but weren’t as well paid
Lived in poor areas and had segregated schools
In the South it was illegal for Black Americans to learn to read or write
In 1862 the set up ex-slave regiments in the Sea Islands
Ex-salves could do manual labour jobs for the war such as digging ditches
Jan 1 1863 Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation which freed the slaves
Reconstruction 1863-77
13th Amendment freed the slaves
Freedman’s bureau was set up to give ex-slaves land
President Johnson tried to bring the country together after the assassination of Lincoln
P- Johnson did little to stop the KKK and allowed Southern States to pass ‘Black Codes’
July 1866 14th Amendment gave the everyone citizenship to anyone born in America regardless of skin colour
March 1870 15th Amendment gave Black Americans the right to vote
in 1872 Freedman’s Bureau stopped and black Americans didn’t own their land (sharecroppers)
In 1875 the government said it was not their problem to stop Black Americans being bullied out of voting poles
What were the 13, 14 and 15th Amendments?
13th Amendment freed the slaves
