Temple Newsam 1922-1939
Had attractions like the stables becoming a cafe and tearooms, golf course
Site for the Great Yorkshire Show (48,648 visitors)
Temple Newsam 1939-1943
Used to display art to keep it safe from the bombing in the city
South Wing had White-washed walls to display the art
Cellars and underground passages were used for air raid shelters
Temple Newsam 1943-1987
Made the decision to turn Temple Newsam into a massive open cast mine
Britain needed 400,000 tonnes of coal to help with the war effort
Came so close to the house cracks appeared in the old walls
Temple Newsam - 1987-present
Restoration programme to return the house to its original appearance
The mine closed and the grounds were returned to a park
The work continued until 2003 and paid for by the National Lottery
Is now used as a tourist attraction and has Go-Ape, tea rooms, play area and a farm
Community space as a music venue, educational site and an art gallery
