Ensured laws were followed
Informed the Privy council of any issues
What did Justices of Peace do?
Unpaid but had significant influence on the local area
Enforced poor laws, collected taxes, set wages and arranged road repairs
Judged criminal cases every 3 months

Every summer she took a trip across England
Plays were prefomed including political messages (Shakespeare)
Portraits showed Elizabeth as young and powerful
Ordinary people only saw the queen on coins
Prayers were occasionally dedicated to the queen

Plays were destroyed if they criticised the queen
Privy Council prevented the publication of anything that criticised the queen
