Q

Temporomandibular Joint

A

joint that allows movement of the mandible for speech and mastication. Temporal bone articulates with mandibular condyles on both sides

A

between temporal bone and mandibular condyle. *divides TMJ into Upper + Lower Synovial Cavities

A

secreted from membranes inside capsule. *lubricates joints, fills cavities

Q

Retraction muscle

A

temporalis

17
Q

Depressing the jaw requires which muscles?

A

Lateral pterygoid and anterior suprahyoid

18
Q

Contralateral Lateral Pterygoid

A

*lateral deviation of mandible, occurs during mastication - one on each side L+R

19
Q

Power Stroke

A

when teeth crunch food

20
Q

Food on one side …

A

all opposite side closing jaw muscles contract.

21
Q

Interoccusal clearance

A

resting position of the TMJ = 2-4mm between opposing arches.

22
Q

Temporomandibular Disorder

A

[TMD] tenderness, swelling, pain, spasms. most symptoms originate from surrounding muscles. palpate to diagnose.

23
Q

Subluxation

A

dislocation of both joints; *head of condyles moves too far anterior on articular eminence.

24
Q

Trismus

A

inability to normally open the mouth; symptom of TMD + subluxation
