They stretch and recoil to help push air out in expiration

To waft mucus to the stomach or the back of the throat to be swallowed

Produce mucus to trap pathogens
How are the trachea and bronchi supported?
C shaped rings of cartilage prevented collapse during inspiration.
The C shape allowed flexibility and space for food to pass down the oesophagus
What is the function of the muscle fibres and elastic fibres in the bronchi?
The smooth muscle contracts to construct the airway and resist the flow of air to the alveoli to control it.
The elastic fibres let the muscle cells relax and the smooth muscle elongate again and the airway opens
