Heart Structure Flashcards
What is the muscle around the heart called?
Cardiac muscle
What is the function of the coronary arteries?
Take blood to the heart
What happens if the coronary arteries are blocked?
It reduces the delivery of oxygen and nutrients like fatty acids and glucose.
It can cause angina or a heart attack
What is the function of the vena cava?
Takes deoxygenated blood to the right atrium
What is the function of the right atrium?
It pushes blood through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle?
What is the function of the right ventricle?
It pushes the blood through the semi lunar valves into the pulmonary artery
What is the function of the pulmonary artery?
To take deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated
What is the function of the pulmonary vein?
It takes oxygenated blood to the left atrium
What is the function of the left atrium?
It pushes blood into the left ventricle through the bicuspid valve
What is the function of the right ventricle?
It pushes blood into the aorta through the semilunar valves
What is the function of the aorta?
It sends oxygenated blood to the body
Why is the left muscle wall thicker than the right muscle wall?
The left needs to pump the blood to the entire body so needs a higher pressure to maintain fit in the body
How is the cardiac muscle structured?
They have fibres that branch into crossbridges to help stimulus around the heart and help the muscle squeeze
They have many mitochondria between the muscle fibres for lots of energy
