Movement of water in plants Flashcards
How can water go through cells?
Water can move freely between the cellulose and in the gaps between cells.
Water can go through the cell wall and plasma membrane into the cytoplasm or vacuole
It can go through the plasmodesmata
What is the plasmodesmata?
2 neighbouring cells are connected by a gap in there cell wall
What is the apoplast pathway?
Water goes through the spaces between the cell walls and cells. It doesn’t go through the plasma membrane. I t uses mass flow not osmosis, and there are dissolved minerals and ions in the water
What is the symplast pathway?
Water enters through the plasma membrane to the cytoplasm and can go through the plasmodesmata
What is the vacuolar pathway?
Water enters through the plasma membrane to the cytoplasm and the vacuole and can go through the plasmodesmata
