Circulatory Systems Flashcards
How is blood a feature of a good transport system?
It is a fluid or medium to carry nutrients, oxygen and wastes around the body
How is heart a feature of a good transport system?
A pump to create pressure that will push the fluid around the body
How are capillaries a feature of a good transport system?
Exchange surfaces that enable substances to enter the blood and leave it again when they are needed
What do tubes or vessels do?
Carry blood by mass flow
How many circuits are needed for an effective transport system?
2 circuits
What is an open circulatory system?
When the blood is not always in the blood vessels and bathes the tissues directly with blood
What happens in insect hearts?
They are used to circulate the blood. It enters by Ostia and then leaves by peristalsis or is poured into the tissue
What do some larger animals with open systems have in their hearts?
Some have open ended tubes attached to the head to direct the blood to the most active parts of the body like the legs and wings
What are the disadvantages of an open system ?
Low blood pressure so slow blood flow
Blood circulation affected by movement
What is a closed circulatory system?
The blood stays entirely in the vessels with a separate fluid, tissue fluid, bathing the tissues and cells
What are the advantages of a closed system?
Higher pressure so quicker blood flow
Quicker oxygen and nutrients delivered
Quicker carbon dioxide and waste removal
Transport independent of movement
What is a single circulatory system?
1 system taking the blood around the body
What is a double circulatory system?
2 systems taking the blood around the body
What is the pulmonary system?
It takes deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs l
What is the systemic system?
The system that goes from the heart to the rest of the body
