Tissues Flashcards
4 primary types
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Nervous
Epithelial
Covers body surfaces for protection, line internal organs for absorption and excretion, and make up glands for secretion
Basement membrane
Layer that anchors epithelial to connective tissue
Shapes
Squamous, cuboidal, columnar
Layers
Simple (single
Stratified (multiple)
Pseudostratified (appears to be multiple, but is really a single layer)
Simple squamous
Single layer, flat thin cells,
Example- membranes
Stratified squamous
Multiple layers of thin, flat cells
Example- skin, mouth, vagina, anus
Simple cuboidal
Single layer, cube-shaped
Example- kidneys, ovaries
Stratified cuboidal
Multiple layers of cube-shaped cells
Example- mammary glands, sweat glands
Simple columnar
Single later of tall cells
Example- digestive tract
Stratified columnar
Multiple layers of tall cells
Example- reproductive tract, male urethra
Pseudostratified columnar
Ciliated, respiratory tract
Transitional
Urinary bladder
Stratified but looks simple
Connective tissue
Fibroblast- secretes protein fibers into matrix
Adipose- fat storage
CT proper
Dense and loose
Dense regular
Lots of collagen (strength)
Example- tendons, ligaments
