Tissues Flashcards
Function of epithelial tissue
Protection, secretion, absorption, excretion
Function of Connective tissue
Bind, support, protect, fill spaces, store fat, produce blood cells
Function ofMuscle tissue
Movement
Function of Nervous tissue
Conduct impulses for coordination, regulation, integration, and sensory reception
Location of Epithelial tissue
Cover body surface, cover and line internal organs, compose glands
Location of Connective tissue
Widely distributed throughout body
Location of Muscle Tissue
Attached to bones, in the walls of hollow internal organs, heart
Location of Nervous tissue
Brain, spinal cord, nerves
How are epithelial cells classified?
By shapes and layers
what are the possible shapes for epithelial tissues?
squamous, cuboidal, columnar
What are the two classifying layers of epithelial?
simple(1 layer)
stratified(more than 1 layer)
what is simple squamous epithelium?
single layer of thin, flattened cells
- suited for diffusion
function of simple squamous epithelium
exchange of gasses in the alveoli of the lungs and lines blood and lamp vessels as well as body cavities
Simple is simple cuboidal epithelium?
single layer of cube shaped cells with centrally located nuclei
Function of simple cuboidal epithelium
functions in secretion and absorption in the kidneys, secretion in glands, and covers the ovaries
what is simple columnar epithelium?
made up of one row of elongated cells whose nuclei are all located near the basement membrane
where are the Nonciliated simple columnar epithelium tissue located?
Nonciliated lines the uterus, stomach, and intestines
-protects underlying tissues, secretes digestive fluids, and absorbs nutrients
where are the ciliated simple columnar epithelium tissue located?
found in the uterine tubes and moves an egg toward the uterus
what are pseudostratified columnar epithelium?
These cells appear layered due to the varying positions of their nuclei within the row of cells, but they are not truly layered
_ fakely stratified
where are pseudostratified columnar epithelium found?
respiratory tubes
what are stratified squamous epithelium?
made up of layers of flattened cells that are designed to protect underlying layers
What parts of the body does stratified squamous epithelium make up?
makes up the outer layer of skin, and lines the mouth, throat, vagina, and anal canal
what does the outer layer of the skin undergo producing a dry, water-proof, protective layer?
keratinization
what are stratified cuboidal epithelium?
two to three layers of cuboidal cells
where does the stratified cuboidal epithelium line ?
lining a lumen of the mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands, pancreas, ovarian follicles, and seminiferous tubules
what is stratified columnar epithelium?
This tissue consists of several layers of cells with columnar cells on the surface
where is the stratified columnar epithelium?
-rare but found in male urethra
what is a transitional epithelium?
transitions from cuboidal to squamus
where does the transitional epithelium line ?
the urinary bladder, urethra, and ureters
Glandular epithelium
made up of cuboidal or columnar cells designed to produce and secrete substances into ducts or into body fluids
exocrine
Glands that secrete products into ducts are
endocrine
those that secrete into body fluids and blood
location of glandular epithelium
Salivary glands, sweat glands, endocrine glands
`what are the three types of connective tissue fibers
-collagen fibers
- elastic fibers
reticular fibers
characteristics of connective tissue
bind, support, protect, serve as frameworks, fill spaces, store fat, produce blood cells, protect against infection, and help repair tissue damage
loose connective tissue
areolar tissue
adipose tissue
reticular connective tissue
cartilage
- hyaline cartilage
-elastic cartilage
fibrocartilage
