CHAPTER 6 Flashcards
Epidermis -
avascular keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Dermis -
connective tissue, blood vessels, and nervous tissue
subcutaneous layer -
(hypodermis) of areolar and adipose tissues
What is the Epidermis composed of?
composed of stratified squamous epithelium.
what is included in the dermis?
includes connective tissue consisting of collagen and elastic fibers, epithelial tissue, smooth muscle tissue, nervous tissue, and blood.
what separates these two skin layers( epidermis and dermis)?
basement membrane anchors the epidermis to the dermis and separates these two skin layers.
what does adipose tissue help do?
helps to conserve body heat
where is the Stratum corneum found?
is in the thickened and hairless skin of the palms and soles.
Functions of the skin 1
- Responsible for maintaining homeostasis
Functions of the skin 2
- Temperature regulation
Functions of the skin 3
- Protection of underlying tissues
Functions of the skin 4
- Retard water loss
Functions of the skin 5
- House sensory receptors
Functions of the skin 6
- Synthesize certain biochemicals
Functions of the skin 7
- Excrete wastes
Functions of the skin 8
- Part of the process to make vitamin D
does the epidermis have blood vessels?
no, only the dermis and subcutaneous layer
stratum corneum
top layer of the epidermis
stratum lucidum
layer underneath the stratum corneum
- found in the thicker palms and soles.
stratum granulosum
layer underneath the stratum lucidum
stratum spinosum
layer of epidermis found between the stratum granalosum and the stratum basale
stratum basale
layer of epidermis underneath the stratum spinosum
basement membrane
seperates the epidermis layer from the dermis layer
hair bulge
surrounds the hair shaft
dermal papilla
squiggally lines on the dermal layer underneath the basement membrane
capillary
branch like structures on blood vessels
lamellated (Pacinian) Corpuscle
leaf head shape in the dermis layer
Tactile (Meissner’s) corpuscle
sperm head looking thing
sebaceous gland
higher along the shaft then the hair bulge
arrector pili muscle
muscle that attach from the dermis to the hair shaft
mesocrine sweat gland
connected to the sweat gland poor
sweat gland pore
opening located on the surface of the stratum corneum
sweat gland ducts
lie within the the mesocrine sweat
hair follicle
lower layer of the distal end of hair shaft
adipose tissue
fat in subcutaneous layer
where does the muscle layer lie?
underneath the subcutaneous layer
Dark hair has ____ that gives it its color
eumelanin (brownish-black)
blonde and red hair have ____ that gives its
pheomelanin (reddish-
yellow)
what plays a role in the temperature regulation
hypothylamus
free edge
outermost part of the nail
nail plate
the structure in between the free edge and the Lunula
cuticle
inner most structure
nail bed
layer underneath the nail made of squamous epithelium
Hair can be found in nearly all regions of the skin except …
palms, soles, lips, nipples, and portions of external genitalia
what do sabeceous glands secret?
Sebum
what does sebum do?
waterproofs and moisturizes the hair shafts and skin
what is sebum
an oily mixture of fatty material and cellular debris
what does merocrine gland respond to
body temperature
what does apocrine sweat glands respond to
body temperature, stress, and sexual arousal
Modified sweat glands are called
ceruminous glands which
secrete wax in the ear canal
Mammary glands,
another type of modified sweat glan which secretes milk
How are superficial cuts filled?
Superficial cuts are filled in by reproducing epithelial cells
what occurs in deeper injuries where there are broken blood vessels?
- involves the formation of a blood clot
