Tissues Flashcards
What are the four types of tissue?
Epithelial tissue
Muscle tissue
Nervous tissue
Connective tissue
What is a tissue?
A group of cells, usually with a common embryonic origin, which function together to carry out specialized activities
What does epithelial tissue do?
Epithelial tissue absorbs, secretes and lines
What does connective tissue do?
Connective tissue protects, connects and binds
What does muscle tissue do?
Muscle tissue generates force
What does nervous tissue do?
Nervous tissue detects changes, organizes responses and responds
What type of tissues are glands made of?
Glands are made of epithelial tissue
What is an endocrine gland?
An endocrine gland is a cell or group of epithelial cells that secrete directly into the fluid around cells without going through a duct.
Includes pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid and pineal glands.
What are the three main components of connective tissue?
Ground substance, fibers, cells
What is in the matrix of connective tissue, and where does the matrix come from?
Matrix in connective tissue is made of fibers and ground substances.
The matrix in connective tissue is secreted by cells.
Which connective tissue cells secrete the fibers and ground substances?
Fibroblasts secrete the matrix
What are the three main types of fibers in connective tissue?
Collagen
Elastin
Reticular
What type of tissue is blood?
Blood is connective tissue
What type of tissue is affected by Sjorgen’s Syndrome?
Connective tissue- WBC attack glandular tissue
What may be the most prominent symptom in Systemic Lupus Erythematous?
Butterfly rash
