What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction is when an organism reproduces by growing larger and then splitting in two.
Sexual reproduction is when two organisms come together to combine their different characteristics to produce offspring.
Asexual reproduction does not allow for changes; sexual allows for changes/adaptation
Where is sperm produced?
In the testicles
What is sperm production called?
Spermatogenesis
What is the purpose of the scrotum?
To keep sperm cool
What’s the really “different” thing that happens in spermatogenesis?
Half of the chromosomes are removed, leaving just 23 chromosomes
Why do sperm cells have a lot of mitochondria?
Sperm move a lot and therefore need a lot of energy
What do the chromosomes contain?
Chromosomes contain the DNA (the plan)
How long do sperm last inside the female reproductive tract?
About 48 hours
Which cells secrete the hormone testosterone?
Leydig cells
Which two hormones together stimulate sperm production in testes?
Testosterone
Follicle stimulating hormone
Where does fertilization usually occur?
Fallopian tubes
Where should the fertilized egg implant and develop?
The uterus
What is endometrium and what does it do?
Endometrium is the mucus membrane lining the uterus. It is intended to feed the fetus, and is expelled monthly if no fertilization occurs
What are the mammary glands?
Modified sweat glands in the breasts which produce milk
What is oogenesis?
The production of eggs cells (how one cell in the ovary develops into an egg)
