Tissue Fluid Flashcards
What is tissue fluid?
Fluid containing water and small molecules that bathes the tissues
Why is tissue fluid forced out of the capillaries?
Blood flow from arterioles to capillaries results in a high hydrostatic pressure causing ultrafiltration out
What remains in the capillaries?
Red blood cells, platelets and large proteins
Why is water reabsorbed?
A low water potential is created by the large molecules and the hydrostatic pressure is lower towards the venule due to loss of liquid
Therefore water reenters capillaries by osmosis
Why is the lymph helpful?
Not all liquid can be reabsorbed since an equilibrium has been reached so the rest of the tissue fluid is absorbed into the lymphatic system
Where does tissue fluid end up after entering the lymphatic system?
It eventually drains back into the bloodstream near the heart
