DNA, Genes And Chromosomes Flashcards
Prokaryotic DNA structure
- short, circular and not associated with proteins
- free floating since prokaryotes have no nucleus
Eukaryotic DNA
- long, linear and associated with proteins called histones
- found in the nucleus
Mitochondria and chloroplast DNA
- short, circular and not associated with proteins
- believed to be derived from bacteria
Which two organelles were believed to once be bacteria?
Mitochondria and chloroplasts
Gene
Base sequence of DNA that codes for the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide or functional RNA
Gene characteristics
- occupy a locus
- has a stop codon and a start codon
Locus
A fixed position on a DNA molecule which codes for a particular gene
Codon
Triplet of bases that encode a specific amino acid
4 DNA bases
Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine
4 RNA bases
Adenine, Uracil, Guanine and Cytosine
Genetic code characteristics
- universal
- degenerate
- non-overlapping
Why is the genetic code said to be universal?
Because it is the same genetic code used in all organisms
Why is the genetic code said to be degenerate?
There are more codons than amino acids so some codons encode the same amino acid
Why is the genetic code said to be non-overlapping?
Each basse is only part of one codon so they are read as separate units
Exons
Coding parts of the DNA
