breaking bad news

A

SPIKES:
- Setting: introduce yourself, what position you’re in in the hospital
- Perception: what do you know about the situation
- Invitation: ask person if they’d like to receive this information now or if they’d like some family members to sit in with them for the news. Break the bad news with warning.
- Knowledge: use simple terminology
- Empathy: apologetic, offer a tissue or advice. Let them cry and let their emotions out. Don’t be scared to have silence. Important to use empathetic tone. let patient speak; how are you feeling right now etc
- Summary: plan of action, what’s going to happen next. Think about giving a leaflet, explaining best course of action.
