how might a shortage of nursing staff affect healthcare in the NHS
: specialist nurses – ones who do specialist procedures that doctors can do, heads and leaders of the team – diverse role in NHS, shortage of nurses = shortage in those services. Overworking staff = In order to ensure that patient care isn’t compromised, the remaining staff have to chip in and do a greater amount – leads to a worse work-life balance, burning out and over time, could lead to a decrease in performance. This can also affect other people’s willingness to apply for nursing which can further worsen the shortage of staff meaning the nurses have to overwork themselves. Increasing demand – due to aging population; they have more complex healthcare needs e.g dementia- requires multidisciplinary input.
how would you tackle the problem of rising ill mental heath in the country
investment into mental health services: funding has big impact; 5 year forward review; government promising 1.2 billion into these services; waiting times reduced. Services for young people and new mothers, veterans etc. workforce numbers; limited in staff in mental health conditions. Improving workforce numbers, going on an employment drive. Education of doctors and nurses; similar to teachers, doctors and nurses need to be more proactive and recognise symptoms of mental health problems. Emergency support; government focusing on improving a and e for mental health problems; emergency mental health ambulances.
assisted dying bill
passed assisted dying bill which proposes giving terminally ill people the right to choose to end their life. There is an eligibility criteria in order to end someone’s life e.g they have to have the mental capacity to make the choice and be expected to die within six months etc. but under the proposals, a patient would then have to wait 14 days after the High Court judge rules their request, which allows them to have a period of reflection and the doctors would dose the drug but they’d administer it themselves.
what have you read recently in the news that relates to nursing
a survey that was conducted between may and july of 2023 showed that racial discrimination was experienced by more than 70% of Black and minority ethnic staff who had been trained in the UK, and by 53% of those who had been trained abroad. for example, their performance has faced greater scrutiny than that of their white colleagues. From this news, I think i think the NHS needs to make more proactive efforts tackle the issue of racism for example, by adopting a culture where racism is spoken about routinely in order to bring awareness to it.
The racism nurses reported experiencing in the new survey doesn’t always come from patients; many said they experienced such behavior from co-workers, supervisors, senior health leaders, and human resources personnel, including being called slurs, being harassed, and being humiliated in front of others
