Q

what do you think is the typical day for a nurse

A

I don’t really think there is a ‘typical day’ for a nurse as each day holds different challenges and jobs. I do know that nurses work as a part of a team and their daily duties include; taking patient vital signs, measurements and medical histories, performing physical examinations, administering medication, providing emotional support to patients and their families and many more roles.

Q

what can you tell me about the nursing code of practice

A

The Code contains a series of statements that taken together signify what good practice by nurses, midwives and nursing associates looks like. It puts the interests of patients and service users first, is safe and effective, and promotes trust through professionalism. This sets out common standards of conduct and behaviour for those on our register. This provides a clear, consistent and positive message to patients, service users and colleagues about what they can expect of those who provide nursing or midwifery care.

Q

what do you think about nurses going on strike? what impact do you think it has on healthcare

A

I think that nurses – as well as any other employees – have the right to fair pay and working conditions. Real-term pay cuts and understaffing, can endanger patients and constitutes unfair working conditions. The strikes are specifically for patient safety so that they’re not at risk due to unsafe staffing levels and a burnt out workforce. I have personally seen and heard the impact of low staffing levels on work experience as well as my mum and whilst this may lead to disruptions in healthcare services, they can also bring important issues to light and drive improvements in the long run.

Q

what are the biggest problems healthcare in this country currently faces

A

demand for healthcare services continues to rise but the funding allocated to the NHS has not kept pace with this increasing demand. Lack of adequate funding puts strain on resources, leading to longer waiting times, limited access to certain treatments and difficulties in maintaining high-quality care. Due to the aging population, people are living longer but with more complex long-term health conditions, it puts additional strain on the NHS as they have to provide more care for older individuals with chronic diseases, dementia, mobility issues etc. Since Covid, there’s also been rising levels of anxiety, depression and PTSD and many individuals are struggling to access the care and support they need. Overall, the UK healthcare system, face a range of significant challenges. Addressing these is an urgent task and require coordinated efforts to increase funding, improve staff retention etc

Q

what do you know about consent

A

consent is a key legal aspect of practicing healthcare and it’s the permission that a patient must give a healthcare professional for them to perform any medical intervention. It can differ for adults, children, those without capacity and those in emergencies and it can also be withdrawn if someone changes their mind. It can be given verbally, like a patient giving a yes or no answer, or can be given in writing, like a patient signing their signature on a consent form…

Q

what is patient confidentiality and why is it important in nursing

A

patient confidentiality refers to the ethical and legal obligation of healthcare professionals, including nurses, to protect the personal and medical information of patients. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of nursing practice and patient care and is protected by law such as the GDPR. I believe keeping patient confidentiality is incredibly important in order to build trust with a patient and to protect the patients’ rights to privacy. This will allow them to feel more confident in sharing information to get the help and support they need

Q

what do you know about the role of a midwife compared with a nurse

A

both play very critical roles in healthcare but they focus on different aspects of care and have distinct responsibilities and areas of expertise. whilst nurses are trained to provide general healthcare services to all types of patients, midwives focus on providing healthcare services to mothers, babies and families throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. Both midwives and nurses are involved in providing care to patients and families and must adhere to strict ethical guidelines.

Q

what do you understand by the term holistic care

A

Holistic care refers to an approach to healthcare that considers the whole person, rather than just their physical symptoms or conditions. This means addressing not only the physical aspects of a patient’s health but also their emotional, mental, social, and even spiritual needs.

In practice, holistic care involves understanding how different factors in a person’s life affect their health and well-being. For example, a holistic nursing approach might include assessing a patient’s psychological state, social circumstances, and lifestyle choices, along with their medical history.

By employing this comprehensive perspective, healthcare providers can create more personalized care plans
