Time Based Processors Flashcards
Convolution
mathematical infinite integral that describes the interaction between the input signal and the characteristics of a device; the output of the device is the input convolved with the impulse response of the device
Convolution reverb
type of reverb that analyzes an impulse response of a room and recreates it with incoming audio signals
Impulse response
short, loud sound played over speakers or in a room to analyze the spectral behavior of a room or device
Chamber
specially designed room whose surfaces are carefully designed with regard to placement and reflectivity, into which a speaker and microphone are placed for the purpose of created controlled reverb for recordings
Deconvolution
mathematical process for separating two signals that have been convolved
Delay line
audio signal processing device used to simulate the effect of an acoustic echo or reverberation; first were made by using tape recorders to record a signal while playing it back on the same machine, the distance between record and reproduce heads creating a time delay
Delay time
the amount of time between an original signal and a reproduced signal that is being delayed
DDL
Digital Delay Line; works similar to a delay line, except the incoming audio is stored on a memory buffer, which is replayed using sample rate converters to slow down and speed up the sample
Hall reverb
reverb that replicates the sound of a concert hall/venue; very long delay times
Reverse reverb
reverses the amplitude envelope of reverb; starts quietly, grows gradually, and cuts abruptly
Multitap delay
delay device that allows the user to control the number of echoes, what their levels are, and where they should be panned (each delay is a tap)
Sync echo
allows the user to synchronize the delay with the tempo of the song
