Inflammation of the thyroid gland

- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
- De Quervain’s thyroiditis (Subacute - Viral)
- Post-partum thyroiditis

- Radiation
- Acute suppurative thyroiditis (Bacterial)
What is the usual trigger of DeQuervain’s thyroiditis?
Viral infection
How will DeQuervain’s thyroiditis usually present?
Neck tenderness
Fever
Viral symptoms
How long will it take for DeQuervain’s thyroiditis to clear on its own?
A few months
What will scintigraphy show in DeQuervain’s thyroiditis?
Low uptake throughout
What is post-partum thyroiditis?
This is a period of transient thyroiditis and thyrotoxicity following pregnancy, followed by hypothyroidism
In what number of post-partum thyroiditis cases, will permanent hypothyroidism occur?
25-50%

Small, diffuse, non-toxic
What other condition is associated with the hypothyroid phase of post-partum thyroiditis?
