What are the two parts of the oral cavity?
Vestibule and cavity proper
What are the boundaries of the oral cavity?
Lips, palatoglossal arch, palate, floor of mouth/tongue and buccal mucosa
What are the functions of the oral cavity?
Taste, mastication, speech, digestion and swallowing
What is the innervation to the anterior 2/3rd of the tongue?
Lingual nerve (Cn V3) and taste by chorda tympani
What is the innervation of the posterior 1/3rd of the tongue?
Cn 9
What is the nerve supply to the tongue?
Hypoglossul nerve (except for the palatoglossus - pharyngeal plexus )
What are the functions of the tongue?
Taste, mastication, swallowing and speech
What are the muscles of mastication?
Lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid, temporalis and masseter
What are the boundaries of the oropharynx?
Soft palate, epiglottis, palatoglossal arch, posterior pharyngeal wall, faucial pillars and palatine tonsils
What type of epithelium is found in the oropharynx?
Stratified non-keratinised squamous epithelium
What is the nerve supply to the oropharynx?
Pharyngeal plexus - Cr 9 and 10
What are the boundaries of the hypopharynx?
Superior margin of the epiglottis, cricoid cartilage, back of larynx
What are the subsites of the hypopharynx?
Pyriform sinus, post-cricoid area and posterior pharyngeal wall
What is the innervation of the hypopharynx?
Pharyngeal plexus (Cr 9 and 10)
What are the functions of the larynx?
Part of the resp. tract, voice and swallowing
