Q

What air aid drills would they carry out?

A

The would do test air raid drills where people would have to leave buses and take shelter in buildings in on the ‘all clear’ could they return.

They would teach children in school to duck and cover by showing them cartoon video clips called ‘dick and cover’ that showed an animal duck and covering.

Q

How real was the threat of nuclear war in the early 1960s?

A

There as n containing the Russians they were shooting lots of test bombs and America essentially did the same thing. They took bombs from everywhere and fired them in response to Russian tests.

The situation had not eased in 1961 October when the USSR carried out a test explosion of the largest bomb ever exploded which exceeded all the power of explosives used in WW2. The Americans responded with their own nuclear programme of nuclear tests until even the two superpowers began to have concerns of the environmental damage.

Q

What suggests that then threat if nuclear war was not real?

A

In 1961 Beth superpowers has hundreds of missiles pointed at each other. The US had more than the USSR but the advantage did not really matter because both sides had enough to destroy each other hundreds of time over. The enemy would not attack first because it knew that if it did the other side would strike back before its bombs even landed and it would be destroyed. It would be suicidal which deterred the other idea from attacking. This policy gave me known as (MAD) Mutual Assured Destruction).
