A

Ruled by fear -The AVO (Russian secret police) used methods of terror to remove political oppositions.
Soviets controlled education and taught children a communist version of their history. This played down traditional links with the West.

The Hungarians were very religious people but communism prosecuted the catholic church.

A

Why did the Soviets defeat the Russians?

A

Soviets used 1000 tanks
Lack of effective support from the West
Russians resorted to terror tactics. Housewives were gunned down along worth children buildings were destroyed. Surrenders were shot down as well.

Why didn’t the UN help?

A

They were busy themselves were distracted by the Suez Canal. French and British troops invaded Egypt in order to protect the Suez Canal from new links established between the USSR and Egypt.

They also felt Hungary was too close to the USSR.

Why did the Soviets invade Russia?

A

Because in 1948 Yugoslavia had broken away from soviet control and in June 1956 the polish revolution meant Poland got were allowed certain reforms. When Hungary rebelled Khrushchev needed to make an example power and show that communist countries could not get away with this.
