Thr Brain in the Cranium Flashcards
Which parts of the brain and brain stem make the forebrain?
The cerebral hemispheres and the diencephalon
Which areas of the brain and brain stem make up the midbrain?
It exists as the midbrain, named after itself
Which areas of the brain and brain stem make up the hindbrain?
The pons and medulla (from the brain stem) and the cerebellum
What are the names of the grooves which split the brain into lobes?
How many lobes are there and what are they called?
Sulci (lateral and central)
X4:
1) frontal
2) parietal
3) temporal
4) occipital
Where is the primary motor cortex located?
Just in front of the central sulcus in the frontal lobe
Where is the primary somatosensory cortex located?
Just behind the central sulcus in the parietal lobe
What does somatosensation include?
Touch Proprioception Pain Itch Non-painful visceral stimuli
Which structure sits below the cerebral cortexes and connects the two hemispheres of the brain?
The corpus callosum
What are the X2 layers of dura mater?
Periosteal and meningeal
Between which meningeal layers are the venous sinuses?
Between the X2 layers of the dura mater
What is an arachnoid granulation/villus?
CSF filters from the subarachnoid space through these into the venous sinuses
What are the names of the venous dural sinuses?
The superior and inferior sagittal sinuses
The straight sinus (links the above 2)
The cavernous sinuses
The sigmoid sinuses
The superior and inferior petrosal sinuses (link sigmoid to cavernous)
What structure is found in each cerebral ventricle which is the location of the production of CSF?
The choroid plexus
What are the cerebral ventricles and how are they numbered?
There are X2 lateral ventricles (1 and 2)
Then a third ventricle (3)
And a fourth ventricle (4)
Where does the CSF exit ventricles into the subarachnoid space?
What is this structure called?
At the roof of the fourth ventricles via the cisterna magna
