Health Related Behaviours, Beliefs and Attitudes Flashcards
Health behaviours can either be enhancing or compromising (a less complex version of risky/protective/illness).
Explain each of these with examples.
Enhancing = promoting health = exercise
Compromising = the opposite = smoking
What things can influence health behaviour?
Social factors
Symptoms
Reinforcement value
Emotions
Cognitive factors (beliefs and attitudes)
What are the X2 main cognitive theories that explain promotion or prevention of behaviour?
1) the health belief model
2) the theory of planned behaviour
In the health belief model, what box do the first 2 boxes accumulate to form?
Perceived threat = perceived susceptibility and perceived severity
In the health belief model, what box do the second 2 boxes accumulate to form?
A cost benefit assessment = perceived costs/barriers and perceived benefits
What is a good acronym for remembering the health believe model categories?
SSBB
Susceptibility
Severity
Benefits
Barriers
What does the theory or planned behaviour include to build on the health belief model?
Self-efficacy
What are the X3 factors that link to behavioural intention in the theory of planned behaviour?
1) attitudes towards behaviour
2) subjective norm
3) perceived behavioural control
What is the intentional behavioural gap with regards to the theory of planned behaviour?
The gap between behavioural intention and actual behavioural change
What is important to bridge the intention-behaviour gap?
An action plan
What is the name of the process by which we scare people into behavioural change?
Does this work?
Fear arousal
Not all the time, people may just turn off tv ads etc
