Thoracic sympathetic trunk (dave's notes) Flashcards
Where is the thoracic sympathetic trunk found?
Lying on the neck of the ribs just lateral to the heads. Anterior to the intercostal vessels.
How many ganglia does the thoracic sympathetic trunk have?
Typically fewer than 12 ganglia.
What does each ganglia of the thoracic sympathetic trunk receive?
A white ramus from its corresponding spinal nerve (emerging from the anterior ramus)
What is given to each thoracic nerve? When? Where is this found?
After relay a postganglionic grey ramus is given to each thoracic nerve, which usually lies medial to the white ramus.
What gives the sympathetic supply to the heart?
The cervical and upper thoracic ganglia (via the cardiac plexus)
What comes from the lower 8 ganglia?
The splanchnic nerves
What does the thoracic sympathetic trunk continue up as?
The cervical ganglion?
How does the thoracic sympathetic trunk leave the thorax inferiorly?
Behind the medial arcuate ligament
