General topography of the superior mediastinum (dave's notes) Flashcards
Summarise the general topography of the superior mediastinum
Veins on the left, arteries on the right; hence great asymmetry in th thorax.
Veins distend more than arteries. What is the clinical significance of this relating to the superior mediastinum?
There is more dead space on the left, hence growths and collections are more likely to form on the right hand side.
Describe the shape and boundaries of the superior mediastinum
Wedge shaped, with the anterior boundary being the manubrium, and the posterior boundary being the upper four thoracic vertebra.
What does the thoracic inlet contain?
The midline is wholly occupied by the trachea and oesophagus. The apices of the lungs lie laterally.
