Lobar and segmental bronchi (dave's notes) Flashcards
Describe the left and right main bronchi
Each main bronchus is about 5cm long. The right is slightly shorter, and more vertical than the left.
Where is the carina found? What is the clinical significance of this?
To the left of the midline. Therefore foreign bodies are much more likely to fall into the right main bronchus.
How is the upper lobe branch of the right main bronchus given off?
Outside the lung
What does each lobar bronchus give rise to?
Segmental bronchi. About ten in each lung.
What is the apical segment of the lower lobe supplied by?
A bronchus which is the highest to arise from the posterior surface of the bronchial tree.
How are the bronchopulmonary segments named?
They are given the same names as the segmental bronchi
What are the names of the bronchopulmonary segments in the right upper lobe? How many segments?
3: Apical, posterior, anterior
What are the names of the bronchopulmonary segments in the right middle lobe? How many segments?
2: Lateral and medial.
What are the names of the bronchopulmonary segments in the right lower lobe? How many segments?
5: Apical, medial, aterior basal, lateral basal, posterior basal
What are the names of the bronchopulmonary segments in the left lower lobe? How many segments?
5: Apical (superior), medial (cardiac), anterior basal, lateral basal, posterior basal
What are the names of the bronchopulmonary segments in the left upper lobe? How many segments?
3: Apicoposterior, apicoposterior ??, anterior
What are the names of the bronchopulmonary segments in the left middle lobe? How many segments?
2: Superior lingual, inferior lingual.
What is the blood supply to the bronchial tree?
The bronchial tree receives its own blood supply - two on the left from the aorta, and one on the right form the 3rd intercostal artery
What is the blood supply to the alveoli?
The alveoli receive a rich capillary plexus from the pulmonary tree
What is the lymphatic drainage of the lung?
Lymph runs towards the hilum. From the pleura their run along the bronchi and the pulmonary artery.
