Middle mediastinum - heart - The atria and ventricles (dave's notes) Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the upper end of the right atrium. Where is this found?

A

The upper end is prolonged as the right auricle. This overlies the commencement of the aorta.

Q

Describe the interior of the right atrium

A

Smooth to the right of the crista terminals, but rough on the left due to pectinate muscle

Q

What opens into the right atrium? What protects this?

A

The IVC (???and SVC??). This is protected by a ridge extending up to the coronary sinus.

Q

What is the posterior wall of the right atrium form?

What is found here?

A

Forms the intertribal septum above the coronary sinus. Here is the fossa ovalis

Q

Describe the surface of the walls of the right ventricle.

A

The walls are thrown into numerous muscular ridges (trabeculae carneae), and form the moderator band and papillary muscles

9
Q

Describe the cusps of the tricuspid valve

A

Anterior, posterior and septal cusps, attached to the AV ring. The posterior cusp is smaller. Give off chord tendineae to the edges of the ventricular surfaces

Q

What happens to the right ventricle wall as it funnels up to the pulmonary orifice?

A

The walls thin on their way to the pulmonary valve.

15
Q

Describe the mitral valve

A

Bicuspid, with anterior and posterior valves. These are smaller and thicker than the tricuspid. Anterior is thicker than posterior

16
Q

Describe the walls of the left ventricle

A

3 timds as thick as the right ventricle and the cavity bulges into the right ventricle

17
Q

Describe the lining of the left ventricle

A

Well developed trabecular carneae with two papillary muscles

18
Q

Describe the aortic valve of the left ventricle

A

Has posterior, left and right cusps.
