Thoracic Spine [MDDR] Flashcards
Osteochondrosis, a term used to describe disorders that affect bone growth by bone necrosis is involved in what pathology
Scheuerman’s Disease (idiopathic)
X-ray for Scheuerman’s disease would show
Wedged vertebrae, irregularity of endplates, narrowing of disc space
Physiotherapy management
As typically patients present with postural deformity physiotherapy management usually involves postural exercises, stretches and strengthening exercises
Surgery for Scheureman’s disease is typically when
the kyphosis exceeds 75 degrees when measured on x-rays
Osteoporosis clinical features
Poor posture
Increased thoracic kyphosis
Dowagers hump
Osteoporosis -> low bone density is usually __________
asymptomatic
Are patients usually aware of osteoporosis
No. Only when a fracture occurs
Not to be missed for the thoracic region -> bone cancer
Symptoms include
Pain limited rom swelling tenderness fever weight loss unremitting night pain
How to recognise inflammatory back pain
insidious onset back pain at night morning stiffness improvement with exercise no improvement with rest
What occurs in thoracic outlet syndrome ?
Compression of structures as they leave the thoracic outlet
“pain, paresthesia, weakness and discomfort in the upper limb which is aggravated by elevation of the arms or exaggerated movements of the head and neck”
Ankylosing Spondylitis is a
inflammatory disorder
Most active phase of ankylosing spondylitis is
between the ages of 20-50 (men>female)
Patient presents with what when he has ankylosing spondylitis
Typically low back pain, and stiffness, reduced spinal mobility, reduced energy fatigue (fatigue up to 65% of patients)
Limited FIS/EIS , as well as side flexion
Note: begins in the SIJ
Ankylosing Spondylitis can result in
progressive ossification of the spine (fusion)
Common causes of thoracic spine according to Brukner and Khan
Costovertebral Disorder Facet joint (intervertebral disorder) Paraspinal Muscle Sprain Fracture Scheureman's Disease
