[AC] {WK2 + WK3} {Oxygen, Sputum Clearance, & Treatments} Flashcards
What is the rationale for Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) devices for sputum clearance?
- Obtain temporary increases in FRC
- Allows TV to be above opening volume for otherwise closed airways
- Collateral ventilation to recruit alveoli and get air behind secretions
- FET to mobilise and clear secretions
What are some Oscillating PEP devices for sputum clearance?
Flutter, Cornet, Acapella
The use if nebuliser hypertonic saline prior to airway clearance can be considered to
increase sputum yield, reduce sputum viscosity and improve ease of expectoration
Delivery of oxygen to the tissues depends on three things?
1) Ventilation
2) Gas Exchange
3) Circulation
Physiological changes with inadequate oxygenation?
Increased RR
Increased HR
Increased Cyanosis (central/peripheral)
Oxygen therapy is for the treatment of
Hypoxaemia
NOT BREATHLESSNESS
Oxygen therapy devices can fit into what two categories:
- Low Flow (LF) Often Variable Performance
- High Flow (HF) Often Fixed Performance
What are some high flow devices for oxygen therapy?
- Venturi Mask
- Ambu Bag
- High Flow Nasal Prongs
What are some low flow oxygen therapy devices?
Nasal Cannula/Prongs
Simple Face Masks
What are the key components of oxygen therapy?
- The device
- FIO2 / Flow Rate
- Monitoring
