[MND] Somatosensation Flashcards
What are some basic somatosensation assessment tests?
The kinds where you ask them; can you feel it?
Light touch
Pin Prick
Hot / Cold
i.e. yes/no test
What is some discriminative somatosensation tests?
Touch Localisation
2 Pt Discrimination
Proprioception
What testing can we do to progress from discriminative somatosensation assessment?
Stereognosis - recognition of objects
2pt discrimination is the ability to detect being touched by two points of stimuli simultaneously. It is a discriminative sensation that is processed in the primary somatosensary cortex
When recording; for each location tested; ensure we record the ….
minimum distance that the patient was able to feel two points
Training intensity for somatosensation should be:
- Random sequence of each sensory training task for 15-20 minutes
- 40 to 60 minutes
- 3x a week for 6 weeks
For training somatosensation (except proprioception) at a strategy level we focus on:
Grasp and manipulation
For training sensation at a functional level we should:
- Facilitate attentive exploration during function
- Identify the features of an object during function
