Thoracic cavity Flashcards
Borders of thoracic cavity?
Superior thoracic aperture:
- post: T1
- late: 1st rib + cartilage
- ant: manubrium
Inferior thoracic aperture:
- Post: T12
- Posterolat: 11-12 rib
- Antlat: joined costal cartilages 7-10
- Ant: xiphoid process
How many of the ribs does sternum articulate with?
7, 1-7
How many ribs? true, false etc
12 ribs,
7 true,
8-10 false,
11-12 floating (no cartilage
Joints of thoracic cavity?
sternocostal,
costovertebral,
interchondral
Costovertebral joints
- Joint head of rib
b/w head of rib and with vertebral
ligament: Radiate(stellate) and intraarticular lig of head of rib. - Costotransverse joint
b/w tubercle of rib and transverse costal facet
lig: sup and lat costotransverselig
Sternocostal joint
b/w cartilage of 2-7 rib and costal noches on sternum
synovial joint
lig: radiate and intra-artcular sternocostal lig.
Interchondral joint
B/w cartilages of 6-9 rib
muscles of thoracic wall
external, internal and innermost, muscles
direction of fibers
external: obliquely ant-inf
internal: superioant
innermost: same as internal
where is intercostal space?
b/w internal and innermost muscles, where nerves and vessels pass
Fascia of thoracic wall
- Pectoral
- claviopectoral, comes continyus with axillary fascia forming suspensoryligament of axilla.
- Endotoracic ( reinforces lung cupula as suprapleural membrane or sibsons fascia.)
nerves of thoracic wall
Thoracic spinal nerves,
- Post rami, -> T1-T12for dorsal thoracic region
- Ant rami-> T1-T11, the 12 is called subcostal nerve
Arterial supply of thoracic wall
Post intercostal a.( thoracic aorta)
Ant intercostal a. (internal thoracic a.)
superior thoracic and lateral thoracic a. ( axillary a.)
Origin and insertion of external intercostal?
o: inf margin of sup rib
i: superior margin of inf rib
They attatch to sternum as external intercostal membrane
origin insertion of inernal intercostal oblique?
O: lateral edge of inf rib
i: medially upward into inf margin of sup ribs
