What did thomas Jefferson believe in?
He believed that there should be no manark

This is the supreme court’s job to make sure to undergo Judicial Review. This is when the court decides if a thing/action is constitutional or unconstitutional.

John Marshal is the new cheif of justice and is the secretary of state.
Marbury V. Madison
Adams on the last night of his candidacy hired marbury. Jefferson told Madison not to deliver the paperwork and so when he didn’t, Marbury sued Madison.
What were the results of the case?
- Lower courts are supposed to deal with jobs
- Supreme court only does judicial review
- Court case get dropped from the Supreme court
Why did the U.S. want New Orleans
The river was a highway for shipping products up the coast and to get to the market.
Napoleon came leader and was growing Sugar cane to feed the slaves in Haiti and was afraid that they would lose access to the port.
What happens to the slaves
They revolted in 1804
What was the cost that jefferson was going to but and what land?
He wanted to buy New Orleans and west Florida for $10 million
Was the sale constitutional?
Jefferson felt it was and was approved by the senate

They got more land than asked for and payed $15 million

Lewis and Clark went on a journey to find if there was a river from the Atlantic to the Pacific to trade. Though they didn’t find that, they found mountains and other animals, people and plants
Who was fighting with America in the War with Tripoli
The pirates from Africa who were stealing ships and cargo
What battleship boat did the pirates steal? How did they resolve it?
The philadelphia. They were going to take it back but resorted to burning it to the ground.
How did they react to the war with Tripoli?
TJ sent the Navy and Marines to go to the city and attack the pirates from land and sea. This made the Marines to walk 500 miles and attack Tripoli.
How did the War with Tripoli end?
A treaty was signed to leave the U.S. ships alone.
Impressment
Pushing someone into service specifically Navy. England did this with American ships.
What were the way England would kidnap people in Impressment?
- Show up with the guns and board the ship
-Walk around a town, jump people and put them on a ship
Embargo Act
This act was put in place to have the U.S. no trade with anyone in the world.
Why did TJ put the Embargo Actin place?
-For Britain and France to stop stealing ships and sailors
-This will make them want to go back to trading with them
Who did the Embargo Act most impact?
Impacted business for not selling what they are cropping. For example cotton.
What was a result for people to do during the Embargo Act?
People from New England especially started smuggling.
