Generally describe how to age cattle
For the first 2-5 years we can very accurately age them by counting pairs of incisors and adding .5 so 2 pairs of incisors = 2.5 yrs old. Once they are 6-10 years old its a little bit harder but you can look at how many pairs have the tooth neck showing and add 1 to their 5 years -> a cow with 4 pairs of incisors and 2 pairs with the tooth neck showing is 7 years old.
Name the 3 reasons why cow get swellings in the jaw region
- Lumpy jaw (actinomyces bovis)
- Bottle Jaw (hypoproteinemia)
- Abscess (freely moveable)
What are the physiologic causes of bottle jaw?
- Hypoproteinemia
- Right sided heart failure: bacterial endocarditis, hardware disease
What are the 3 clinical signs of traumatic reticulopericarditis?
- Hunched up
- Distended jugular + pulses with a heart murmur (washing machine sound)
- Withers pinch test
Treatment for hardware disease
First you have to decide if you want to treat or not before giving anything with a slaughter withdrawal.
Magnets, NSAIDS, Antibiotics
Bacterial endocarditis will have a __ and distended __. When the withers pinch test is performed, the animal should __. Treatment is the __
Bacterial endocarditis will have a murmur and distended jugular. When the withers pinch test is performed, the animal should drop . Treatment is the same as hardware disease but without the magnet.
Mycobacterium paratuberculosis is also known as __ when clinical signs are present and is a chronic infection of the __ and __. The intestine thickens which causes __ leading to a ___ causing hypoproteinemia
Mycobacterium paratuberculosis is also known a Johnes disease when clinical signs are present and is a chronic infection of the ileum and regional lymph nodes. The intestine thickens which causes malabsorption leading to a protein losing enteropathy causing hypoproteinemia
A cow with diarrhea, weight loss and a normal appetite would put what at the top of your differentials?
Johnes disease
Johnes disease is more common in __ herds
Diary herds
What is the best diagnostic test for Johnes disease?
Blood or milk Elisa is the cheapest and fastest and typically is used to determine if cattle are negative
Clinical cows will either use blood ELISA or fecal culture
