Q

briefly explain the pathogenicity of pinkeye

A

Moraxella bovis is the bacteria that causes the infection by destroying corneal cells. They are particularly effective because of pilli that enhance its attachment to the cornea and establish infection. The cytotoxins then go on to form ulcers in the cornea. If an animal already has damage/irritation to the cornea then this will assist the bacteria to penetrates its defense mechanisms

Q

Briefly explain the treatment for pinkeye

A

Most people will do bulbar scleral injections with procaine penicillin and Dexmethasone so the animal blinks the meds around the eye. It works better if you get it into the bulbar sclera rather than the sub conjunctiva. Then you may give Oxytetracycline, Draxxin, Nuflor, or Excede SQ.

Q

What are some preventative practices for pinkeye?

A

Basically keep then from being able to scratch/infect their eyes: fly control , pasture management (bush hogging, weed control), UV protection and feeding management (don’t let them dig in)

Q

Explain how you might decide to treat or cull an animal with cancer eye ?

A

You take into account the staging and grading:

Stage 1. Plaques
Stage 2. Keratomas
Stage 3. Papillomas
Stage 4. Carcinomas

If its located on the nicititating membran and lower eyelid then typically it is more aggressive. Those that have carcinomas can be culled with condemnation of the head but if you have a cow stage 1-3 you need to take into account how long you need her (pregnancy, calf, etc.)

Q

List some treatment options for cancer eye

A
  1. Surgical excision - 90% cure but 45% recurrence
  2. Cryotherapy- 60-90% efficacy but lesion must be <2.5 cm
  3. Hyperthermia- 90% cure but lesion < 2.5cm
17
Q

Describe the difference between enucleation and exenteation

A

Enucleation is the removal of the globe only while exenteation is the removal of the globe and orbital contents

18
Q

Exentiation is indicated for __ while enucleation is indicated for__

A

Exentiation is indicated for ocular neoplasia while enucleation is indicated for info within the globe, glaucoma, and globe rupture
