Disorders Of The Eye Flashcards
The primary infectious eye disease of cattle is __ and the primary neoplastic disease of cattle is __
The primary infectious eye disease of cattle is Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (pinkeye) and the primary neoplastic disease of cattle is squamous cell carcinoma (cancer eye)
Pinkeye in cattle causes decreased __ and __ due to __
Weight gain, milk production, pain
briefly explain the pathogenicity of pinkeye
Moraxella bovis is the bacteria that causes the infection by destroying corneal cells. They are particularly effective because of pilli that enhance its attachment to the cornea and establish infection. The cytotoxins then go on to form ulcers in the cornea. If an animal already has damage/irritation to the cornea then this will assist the bacteria to penetrates its defense mechanisms
T/F: cattle can be carriers of pinkeye
T
When do cattle most often get pinkeye?
It typically effects bos Taurus calves in the summer who have nutritional deficiencies
The first signs you might see for pinkeye is __. what other signs will you observe as the infection progresses?
Tearing will be first and then scleral injection, corneal edema, central corneal ulcer
T/F: the pinkeye vaccines have great efficacy
F, they have very little efficacy
Briefly explain the treatment for pinkeye
Most people will do bulbar scleral injections with procaine penicillin and Dexmethasone so the animal blinks the meds around the eye. It works better if you get it into the bulbar sclera rather than the sub conjunctiva. Then you may give Oxytetracycline, Draxxin, Nuflor, or Excede SQ.
What are some preventative practices for pinkeye?
Basically keep then from being able to scratch/infect their eyes: fly control , pasture management (bush hogging, weed control), UV protection and feeding management (don’t let them dig in)
SCC or “cancer eye” is the __ cancer in cattle and can lead to whole carcass __
Most common, condemnation
Name the preferred locations of cancer eye (SCC) in cattle
- Conjunctiva
- Corners legal junction
- Nicitiating membrane
- Cornea
- Eyelid
Name some risk factors for cattle to develop cancer eye
It typically occurs in white face cattle exposed to UV light that are 7-8 yrs old, and have genetic ties to the disease
What viral components are thought to be related to SCC?
Herpes and Papillomavirus
How often should white faced cattle have their eye checked?
Annually! At least
Explain how you might decide to treat or cull an animal with cancer eye ?
You take into account the staging and grading:
Stage 1. Plaques
Stage 2. Keratomas
Stage 3. Papillomas
Stage 4. Carcinomas
If its located on the nicititating membran and lower eyelid then typically it is more aggressive. Those that have carcinomas can be culled with condemnation of the head but if you have a cow stage 1-3 you need to take into account how long you need her (pregnancy, calf, etc.)
