Thermoregulatory system Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
What happens when an animal gets too hot?
The heat loss centre in the hypothalamus is stimulated
What happens when an animal gets too cold?
The heat gain centre of the hypothalamus is stimulated
What three parts are involved in thermoregulation?
• Thermoreceptors
• A thermoregulatory centre
• Effectors
What is an endotherm?
Body temp is regulated by internal sources
What is an ectotherm?
Body temp is regulated by external sources
What is poikilotherm
Body temp fluctuates with the environment
Give three evaporative cooling mechanisms
• Gular fluttering
• Sweating
• Panting
Give 2 symptoms of hypothermia
•Confusion
•Memory loss
•Shivering
Give 2 symptoms of hyperthermia
•Blurred vision
•Dizziness
•Fatigue
•Headache
What is piloerection?
Pilli erector muscles in the skin cause hair/feathers to stand on end - traps a layer of watm air between the hair and the skin - reduces heat loss
What is pilorelaxation?
• Erector muscles relax and hairs/feathers lower to skin so air can circulate - convection and evaporation
Give 2 warming methods
• Shivering
• Brown adipose tissue
