thermoregulation Flashcards
what is Thermoregulation?
Process that the body uses to keep internal temperature steady
where is the Thermoregulation centre located?
it is located in the hypothalamus
what happens if the body is too hot
erector muscles, relax and hair lays flat
you also sweat, which evaporates through the pores on your skin, transferring energy from skin to environment
What happens if the body is cold?
erector muscles, contract and hair stand on, and this traps an insulating layer of air near the surface of skin
why do you shiver?
You shiver when you’re cold, which causes muscles to contract ⬆️ rate of respiration.
why does vasoconstriction occur?
Occurs when the body is cold, which decreases blood flow near the surface of skin, which decreases energy transferred to surrounding
why does vasodilation occur?
It occurs when the body is too hot, which increases blood flow near the surface of skin, which increases energy transferred to surroundings
