Thermodynamics - Work, Heat, & Internal Energy Flashcards
What two things does the universe consist of?
System and surroundings
The three types of system?
Open, closed, isolated
What is an open system?
Matter and energy can be transferred
What is a closed system?
Matter cannot be transferred but energy can
What is an isolated system?
Both matter and energy cannot be transferred
What are the two ways that energy can be exchanged?
Heat and work
What are the units for Joule?
Pa, m3
If work is done on the system, what happens to the value “w”?
It increases
If work is done by the system, what happens to the value “w”?
It decreases
What is the formula for work for expansion against external constant pressure?
w = -P(ex) ΔV
What is the formula for work for free expansion?
w = 0
What is the formula for work for reversible isothermal expansion of ideal gas?
w = -nRT ln(Vf/Vi)
How can ΔU be determined?
ΔU will be 0 if the temperature is constant.
ΔU = w + q can be used if the values are known
What is a state function?
The current state of a system
What is a path function?
The process and energy transfer involved in reaching a state
