Thermodynamics Flashcards
Define state function.
A property whose value does not depend on the path taken to reach that specific value.
How do you calculate the energy per particle?
Divide the energy (J) by avogadro’s constant.
How do you convert kelvin into celsius?
0K = -273⁰C
How do you convert Fahrenheit into celsius?
F = [(9/5) x (C)] + 32
What is the system?
the object experiencing the thermodynamic transformation
What are the surroundings?
any part of the universe in direct contact with the system
What does the law of conservation of energy state?
When system absorbs an amount of heat (Q) from surroundings and does quantity of work (W), the internal energy change is calculated by: ΔE = Q - W.
What are the three methods of heat transfer?
Convection
Conduction
Radiation
What happens when metal is heated?
It expands at a rate proportional to the change in temperature it experiences.
