Explain wish fulfilment
Freud believed dreams were the royal road to the unconscious and were the fulfilment of Desires that could not be satisfied through the conscious mind. Dreams protect the sleeper and allow expression of buried urges and desires
What is manifest content
What we actually recall from the dream / the story e.g. sailing on a boat
What is latent content
The hidden meaning of the dream - the underlying wish desire or emotion
What is the process of turning latent content into manifest content
Dream work
What are some examples of symbolism
King / queen = parents
Falling in or out of water = birth
Jewels = a loved one
House = human figure
Small animals vermin = children or siblings
Did Freud think eveything was symbolic
Nope he thought you should consider the context of a person life and “ sometimes a cigar is just a cigar “
What are 4 dream work processes
Condensation
Displacement
Symbolism
Secondary elaboration
What does the therapist do with manifest content
The therapist reverses dream work and uncovers the latent content
Explain Condensation
Where several ideas are condensed / are merged together to form one image.
One image / object = several ideas
Explain displacement
The emotional significance of the dream object is projected onto another object or person to protect our mind. E.g. fall out with parents = an assassin trying to kill the king
Explain symbolism
Symbols / images replace actions a person or an idea
Secondary elaboration
Fitting all the items of a dream together to make sense and to form a logical story. This can be a mix of real life past events to further disguise the latent content
What is the role of the therapy in DA
They reverse the dream work process and provide various interpretations based on the clients feedback and knowledge of the clients life. The client makes the final choice of the interpretation that makes the most sense taking into consideration their personal circumstances
