Assumptions Of The Positive Approach Flashcards
What is the 1st assumption
The acknowledgement of free will
Define free will
The view that we respond actively to events around us. Individuals choose their own course of action and have responsibility for their behaviour. We are free from coercion to choose any course of action and are not determined by internal and external pressures.
Explain the acknowledgment of free will
We are responsible for purchasing emotional well being and therefore happiness is accessible to us all. Being to deterministic can be detrimental leaving us feeling helpless. Happiness comes from acknowledging we have free will
State the example for acknowledgment of free will
Diener and seligman explored the ties between people’s relationships with friends and family / how much time they spent with them. Those who spend more time / had stronger ties were often happier and there was a negative correlation between levels of happiness and depression
Who developed the positive approach
Seligman in the 1990’s
What does the positive approach think
He thought that traditional psychology focused too much on mental illness and not enough on how humans can flourish and Succeed
What is the model for the scientific theory of happiness
The perma model
What does perma stand for in the perma model
P = positive, distinction between pleasure and enjoyment
E = engagement, total immersion
R = relationships , we are rarely alone when happiest
M = meaning, finding fulfilment
A = accomplishments, achieving goals
What is the 2nd assumption

Authenticity of goodness example
We have behaviours that are our “signature strengths” these are characters that are most essential to who we are
What are the 6 virtues
Wisdom courage humanity justice temperance and transcendence
What will our core strengths do
If we use them and incorporate them into our daily lives we will experience authentic happiness and improve our well being - seligman 2001

What are the three desirable lives
